Thermage is one of the more recent newcomers to the family of supposed cellulite treatment options. It started as a non-invasive (no cutting) method to tighten loose, saggy skin on the face. But there are many horror stories reporting serious damage and disfigurement. I’ll share links to those in a minute…
The company then came up with the idea to create a new “tip” to place on the device so it could be used to target cellulite on the lower body areas. A quick review of the top authoritative sources all indicate this conclusion: “Thermage does not get rid of cellulite.”
OK, not surprising – but there are still women who are willing to risk physical damage, financial loss and long term emotional damage by taking a gamble on this risky treatment.
What is Thermage?
Here is a short version of what it is:

I’m only going to share one of the links she sent simply for illustrative purposes. The other link was a spammy type site with no credibility whatsoever.
In my investigation and research I came across an FAQ page. All the answers were complete and total B.S. Here is just one sick and sad example from that page:

A: Yes, because it removes cellulite preventing this from recurring in the treated areas, without damaging the vascular system.

3 Wrong Cellulite Exercises Can Hurt You Fast & Seriously
If you’re like most women who battle cellulite problems – then you already know that creams, pills, scrubs, injections and treatments don’t work to remove the mushy dimples and shadows. And you’re probably reading this now because you realize that only the right type of exercise can attack cellulite at the root cause.
You’re about the see the “supposed” cellulite exercises to avoid at all costs – and you’re going to see which types of exercises do get rid of cellulite, once and for all.
The broad generalization of “the only proven way to get rid of cellulite is with exercise and good nutrition” can be extremely misleading and seriously damaging. “Exercise and good nutrition…” has a thousand meanings – and this is where the problem is.
Most doctors and trainers do not know SPECIFICALLY which exercises and what specific types of foods a woman needs to do – in order to target and get rid of her cellulite. Because of this – many women find themselves on a traditional gym workout program with weights, machines and long/boring cardio sessions.
The cookie cutter fitness approach doesn’t address everything on a woman’s body, ESPECIALLY the problematic cellulite spots.
Misleading Info Can Lead to Injury
Recently, I came across another ‘confusing’ article about cellulite reduction. What really got me angry is not only how misleading the article is – but also the harm it can cause to the typical woman.
See, as I mentioned in a previous issue – not all exercises get rid of cellulite. But furthermore – there are many ‘gym’ exercises that are just not meant for the female body. Some of these awkward exercises even injure men, but guys usually hide their injuries – because they don’t want to look like wimps.
The misleading article mentions 10 “supposed” anti cellulite exercises. I’ve listed 3 of them here – just to give you a clear and helpful example:
Not for Cellulite: Stiff Leg Dead Lift
1. Stiff-legged Dead-Lifts: this common gym exercise is super risky for 2 reasons. The first is you are required to perform this with knees straight/locked (no bend in the knee). This is NOT the way our body works. The second is the massive amount of stress placed on your lower and mid-back. Stay away from this move. FAR AWAY.
Not for Cellulite: Smith Machine Squats
2. Smith Machine Squats: using this machine defeats the purpose when it comes to cellulite removal. The key to cellulite removal is deep and thorough stimulation via slow and intentional use of the muscles and muscle fibers. The Smith Machine allows the user to let momentum do more of the work instead of the actual muscles. In other words – more time and energy is wasted while increasing risk on injury of the neck, back, hips and knees.
Not for Cellulite: Leg Extension Exercise
3. Leg Extensions: Most women have cellulite on the back on the thighs, legs and butt. A smaller percentage have it on the front. So this move is not only a waste on time because it’s supposed to focus on the front thigh muscles – BUT moreso because it’s a single-joint, isolation type exercise. There is rarely a reason for any woman to use this kind of machine. That energy and effort is better spent on “compound” exercises which involve 2 or more joints and require the use and stimulation of several muscle groups instead of only one.
The first critical problem with these lower body exercises, insanely and falsely being misrepresented as “exercises for cellulite” – are that they each can only be done on an uncomfortable workout machine or require you to use dangerous extra weights – which means you’d have to subject yourself to the sweat, stench and stink of your local gym – not to mention the inconvenience this imposes on your busy schedule.
The second, and the BIGGEST problem is that these are the type of exercises that I speak about on other pages of this website – They are exercises that DO NOT deliver the desired effect – which is targeting the exact muscle layers below the cellulite trouble spots – and therefore WILL NOT smooth and tighten your skin. You will NOT see these wrong exercises in the Naked Beauty Program if you choose to become a happy client.
Why Waste Your Time and Risk Painful Injury?
In addition to being a complete waste of your time – these exercises have been proven to cause long term injuries. This is one of the primary reasons physical therapy clinics started to set up offices INSIDE health clubs and fitness centers in the late ’80s and early ’90s. They get A LOT of desperate patients from the gym floor; the people who get unnecessarily injured during their strenuous workouts.
But here’s what I really don’t like…
Imagine this unfortunate scenario:
You read that misleading article. You don’t know any better – so you join the local fitness center. You start doing all these machine and weight exercises – because you’ve been misled to believe they will get rid of your cellulite. Totally NOT your fault. How could you know??
So, 2 months goes by and you see no changes whatsoever – after all that time and effort. You get frustrated and you give up. And you tell yourself – “Exercise doesn’t doesn’t get rid of cellulite – I just proved it to myself.”
But in reality – all you proved is this:

5 Factors Which Prevent Cellulite Removal or Make It Worse
Most women trying to get rid of lower-body cellulite are running after the elusive answer to the burning question:
“What is the best cellulite treatment?”
When, in reality – she should first find out what may actually be the cause of her cellulite – or what factors might even be making it worse.
These 5 factors hold the key to knowing some of the top causes of the bumps, dimples and dents in the trouble spots and problem areas of the average woman.
1 – High Stress Can Cause Cellulite or Make It Worse
Most women don’t even know the level of stress they have come to live with on a full-time basis. The pace of modern day society and the overload of external stimulatory sources naturally causes sub-conscious hyperactivity. This usually manifest in various levels of worrying, pre-occupation and unnecessary use of mental and emotional energy.
But take that and add to it the common, high-intensity, stress events which occur in all our lives at various times – to varying degrees. For example; the sickness of a loved one, the death of a friend, divorce, work/job challenges, family dis-functions….
All of these stress factors have a direct impact on hormones. Cortisol, epinephrine, and oxytocin, just to name a few – are effected by stress. The levels and frequency of these and other hormones in the body can influence many physical characteristics. One of them being your cellular integrity.
If the cells of your body are being bombarded with hormone levels which are out of whack – then the adverse results will show. Muscles, connective tissue and skin cells will be loose, limp and mushy. This can even happen in women who are trying their hardest with proper exercise and nutrition.
Stress recognition and management must be addressed in this type of situation. Not only for how you look when naked – BUT your long term health and longevity is highly dependent on this.
2 – Poor Sleep Can Cause Cellulite or Make It Worse
Sleep patterns and quality of sleep has an incredibly powerful effect on our hormones. In fact, sleep is where most of the magic happens. Some people are actually able to counteract the effects, to a certain degree–of a high stress life, with deep, consistent and regular sleep rituals.
Nonetheless, because of the direct effect on hormone regulations, when sleep quality is sacrificed, no matter the reasons – the negative effects on the hormones are in the same zone as what is described in the ‘stress’ section, above.

I’ll keep this simple and maybe leave the bigger discussion for a future, singular article.
It is widely known there are many medications which cause weight gain. Paxil, Seroquel, Zyprexa, just to name a few are some of the top offenders. But, it’s important to note there are many more.
But here is something which often goes un-noticed: The negative effects of medications on BODY-COMPOSITION.
Think about this. Someone starts a drug regimen to treat some type of ailment or condition. Their weight never changes and they like that, BUT – they notice the characteristics of thier muscle-tone and skin integrity are changing. They are baffled.
What is going on??
Fact is hormones can be affected by drugs, not only in a way which causes weight gain, but in some it can cause body composition to change in an unfavorable way – with no cause in weight change. Lower muscle density (muscular atrophy) with some extra body fat keeps one at the same weight but with visible mushy-ness and new bumps and dimples in the skin.
When someone sees these unwanted physical changes it is best to address them with your treating physician as soon as possible – and not wait until it gets “so bad”.

Endermologie: Can It Massage Away Cellulite?

The Burning Question
But the burning question is: Can the deep tissue massage replicated with Endermologie be effective when you want to get rid of cellulite?

Endermologie for Cellulite Treatment Is FDA Approved? Hmmm… Really?
First of all, it’s important to understand what exactly the FDA approved in regards to Endermologie. In their enthusiasm for a cure for cellulite, some companies may misunderstand what was authorized by the FDA and fail to include the word “temporary” in their claims related to cellulite reduction.

The device currently used with Endermologie has been improved since its initial filing in the types of heads available, the name of the device, and the addition to the claims for cellulite.
In their approvals the FDA stated Endermologie could be marketed for therapeutic and cosmetic uses as follows:
- Reduction of Secondary Lymphederma of the Arm (SLA) Post Mastectomy
- Improvement of Secondary Lymphedema
- Improvement of lymphatic circulation in the treated area
- Relieves minor muscles aches and pains
- Relieves muscle spasm
- Temporarily improves local blood circulation
- Relieves minor muscle aches and pains, relieves pains, relieves muscle spasm and improves local circulation during burn rehabilitation
- Temporarily reduces the appearance of cellulite
What started as a treatment for recovering burn victims, blossomed into a love child of the lucrative cosmetic industry. Like other inventions, a “side effect” was noticed in regards to the look of a person’s skin undergoing treatment.
Temporary Results – Maybe.
It’s very clear from the language in the FDA approval that any improvement for the treatment of cellulite must be listed as “temporary reduces the appearance of cellulite”. As much as we would like to believe, there are no facts to back up any claim of a permanent cure for cellulite by using the deep tissue massage of Endermologie.
Even sneakier is how some of the ads for Endermologie use camera tricks to fool women into thinking it works. Take a look at the photo below. There is one key difference between the two photos. The angle of the lights.

See, on the left, the light is shining from above and this creates a shadowing effect on the skin, where any bumps, dimples or dents become easily visible. You can tell where the light is coming from by the larger shadows just below the butt.
In the supposed “after” photo on the right – the light is being shined on the body area from DIRECTLY BEHIND the woman. Since the light is being shined directly at the body there is no shadowing effect and hence hardly any appearance of the bumps and dimples known as cellulite.
Sad, But True… So Why Doesn’t It Work?
So let’s talk about what a deep tissue massage does, the basis of Endermologie, so that you can understand why it’s not effective as a permanent solution to cellulite.
When a muscle is tense, or has been injured, adhesions form in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These adhesions are hardened tissue that can block circulation, cause pain, restrict movement and cause inflammation. The deep tissue massage breaks down that tissue and loosens things up.
However, the cause of cellulite is not adhesions, or blocked circulation, or inflammation as some believe. Cellulite is the result of un-toned muscles which are not firm or strong enough to properly support the skin and subcutaneous fat layers which lie directly on top of them.

How good are the Velashape promises?
VelaShape is the “new” name for the “old” VelaSmooth machine. They took the old machine, modernized it a bit and gave it a modern name. It’s hook is that the FDA has given the company who makes the machine and all the ‘medi-spas’ permission to market the treatments as a possible way to temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Sounds hopeful but let’s look a little closer.
Is a temporary solution for the reduction of cellulite good enough for you? Or, would you rather go for something more permanent? Is it possible that with a better understanding of what cellulite is, you can get smooth skin permanently?
Let’s dig deeper to find out the answer.
Velashape is one of the newest massager laser treatments to try and conquer the brutal battle with cellulite. But can this machine that has been called both a Star Wars-like R2D2 robot and a Hoover vacuum cleaner with heat do the trick?
It’s hopeful – the idea of ridding yourself of cellulite with an elaborate massage device.
It’s popular, embraced by some of Hollywood’s elite. But is the science behind the theory of Velashape’s promise to temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite good enough to jump on the bandwagon?
First of all, consider the mixed reviews by patients of the Velashape system. To get the best results, the company suggests that patients sign up for several treatments ranging from 12-14 at a cost that usually exceeds $1000. Then, it is advised that the patient continue on a long term maintenance program, after the initial series of treatments.
Temporary Changes – “At Best”
The first question that usually goes through the mind of someone considering Velashape is whether or not it will work. And, unfortunately, they cannot be given a definitive answer. However, they can be told with much certainty that any results seen in the reduction of the appearance of cellulite will be temporary.
That is what the FDA has approved for marketing the treatments. Temporary results.
With the reality that the results may or may not happen; and the promise that any changes in the texture or appearance of cellulite will be temporary, the person considering Velashape will then decide whether or not the cost warrants the procedure.
Next, a potential patient of Velashape will consider whether or not there is another option. Perhaps one that won’t take such a bite out of their wallet or one that will give results that are more permanent in nature. After all, if you are going to spend time and effort to get rid of cellulite, doesn’t it make sense to find something that will work?
The next logical step is for the potential patient to seek out and discover what cellulite actually is. Once that’s understood then it is much easier to determine what type of treatment or approach will give you the best chance of eliminating your cellulite.
A Theory of Manipulation?
Velashape presents an unproven theory that cellulite is fat that must be massaged and manipulated. When that’s done they say that blood flow increases, the lymph nodes are activated, connective tissue is broken down, and cellulite is erased. That’s the idea, anyhow, behind Velashape and its dual massagers and suction mechanism.
However, that’s not exactly accurate.
Cellulite does involve fat and it does involve muscle. But it has nothing to do with blood flow, drainage, toxins or breaking down the connective tissue. When your body is healthy and cellulite-free it is because the underlying muscle layers are firm enough to provide a sturdy foundation for your skin and that underlying, protective layer of fat that sits right below it.
And, most people know that in order to get firmly lifted muscles, they need to be stimulated properly. Not just the big ones, but also the smaller ones which are usually neglected by most generic exercises and fitness routines.
